Commissioner of Police Extends Gratitude to the Public for an Incident Free Carnival
The Valley Aug 13, 2009: The Commissioner of Police expressed a high level of satisfaction following the recently completed 10 day celebration of Emancipation/Summer Festival . Although sadden by the lost of Shaun Mussington, to whose family I extend deepest symphathy, the celebrations were generally incident free.
The concept of Unity which was echoed throughout seemed to have reminded everyone that this is our country and any form of violence will negatively impact all of us.
Although there were some persons arrested, who failed to heed the warning and are presently recognizing that they did so to their detriment, because the majority are currently serving prison terms. This signifies that the judiciary is taking a strong position regarding lawless particularly when persons are warned about the likely consequences and chose to disregard such a warning. I applaud the support given by the Chairman of the Carnival Committee, Mr. John Benjamin the coordinator Mr. Fitzroy Tomlinson, who personally ensured that all our concerns regarding security were dealt with. it is well known that there was alot of apprehension leading up to the celebration and certain pundits continued to induce fear would be participants. However the collective effort by the committee, the general public, the Government of Anguilla and the Royal Anguilla Police Force demonstrated a determination that we had not forgotten, particularly, 2008 Last Lap Jump Up.
It is fitting therefore that I highlight the yeoman effort by the members of the Royal Anguilla Police Force including our Special Constables and Sheriff Security Services. We know it was a challenged and unified approach, commitment, dedication and resilience shown paid off. I commend all the officers for a job well done and thank the General Public who took time to express their appreciation and admiration for the work of the officers. As we look towards 2010, all things being equal, we commit to improve on what we would have done in 2009.
